Job Overview

An opportunity is available for dedicated, enthusiastic, and motivated Maternity Support Workers to join the maternity team. This role requires flexibility to work day and night shifts (07:45–20:15 and 19:45–08:15, respectively), including weekends and bank holidays, across all departmental areas.

Main Duties
The role involves working as part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver personalized care under the supervision of registered midwives or doctors. Key responsibilities include supporting women and their families during antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care and assisting with hygiene, feeding, and administrative tasks.

Key Responsibilities

General Duties

  • Maintain professionalism and promote a positive image of the Trust.
  • Respond to patient calls and provide appropriate assistance.
  • Support client confidentiality and adhere to Trust policies.
  • Ensure cleanliness of clinical areas, manage stock supplies, and liaise with support staff.

Clinical Duties

  • Assist with hygiene, feeding, and personal care needs of women and newborns.
  • Provide breastfeeding support in accordance with Trust and national guidelines.
  • Perform observations such as maternal temperature, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation and escalate findings as necessary.
  • Assist with clinical procedures, such as venepuncture, catheter care, and newborn blood spot screening, following competency training.
  • Support emergency procedures by acting as a scribe or runner.
  • Record care activities accurately in clinical documentation.

Administrative Duties

  • Provide clerical support to midwives, including discharge paperwork and data entry.
  • Answer telephones and manage communications effectively.
  • Participate in audits and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

Education and Development

  • Complete mandatory training and a Care Certificate program within three months of employment.
  • Engage in departmental learning opportunities and appraisals to identify training needs.

Working Environment
The maternity department is located in a purpose-built facility opened in 2013. The unit delivers approximately 4,700 babies annually through consultant-led and midwife-led services. Comprehensive antenatal and postnatal care is provided both in the hospital and community settings.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

  • Core Skills Level 2 in Maths and English or equivalent.
  • NVQ Level 2 in Health Care or equivalent qualification.
  • Commitment to training and completion of the Care Certificate program.
  • Experience with phlebotomy, hospital patient record systems, and infection control.

Desirable Criteria

  • Completed Care Certificate.
  • Experience providing breastfeeding support and handling complaints.
