Job Summary

Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is seeking five Mental Health Practitioners to join its multidisciplinary CAMHS team in Liverpool. The role involves working with children, young people, and families to provide therapeutic interventions, assessments, and support under the supervision of experienced CAMHS clinicians.

The post holder will act as a key worker, liaising with external agencies including health, education, social care, and the voluntary sector. The role also includes supporting service user participation and contributing to the design and delivery of mental health services.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to assess, plan, and implement evidence-based mental health interventions for children and young people.
  • Act as a case manager for children and young people with mild to moderate mental health issues.
  • Deliver group-based therapeutic interventions under the supervision of senior CAMHS practitioners.
  • Monitor risk factors and ensure rapid access to support for children and young people presenting with more severe mental health concerns.
  • Promote the safeguarding and welfare of children and young people.
  • Collaborate with families, schools, and healthcare providers to develop intervention plans and ensure effective mental health care.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential clinical records and contribute to service improvement initiatives.

Person Specification

Education, Training & Qualifications

Essential:

  • Degree-level qualification or equivalent experience in a child and family-related field (e.g., social work, youth work, nursing, mental health practice).
  • Qualified in a core profession such as Mental Health Nurse (RMN), Occupational Therapy, Social Work, or Art Therapy.
  • OR completion of BABCP Knowledge Skills and Attributes (KSA) framework for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
  • OR successful completion of an HEE-commissioned course (e.g., Children and Young People’s Wellbeing Practitioner, Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner).

Experience

Essential:

  • Experience working with children, young people, and families in health, social care, or education settings.
  • Experience supporting children with social, emotional, and behavioral difficulties.
  • Experience delivering therapeutic interventions for children, young people, or families.
  • Experience working with culturally diverse populations and adapting services for improved access.

Desirable:

  • Experience collaborating with education, social care, and healthcare providers.
  • Experience delivering group interventions.

Knowledge & Skills

Essential:

  • Understanding of child mental health, emotional well-being, and developmental needs.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding legislation and procedures.
  • Ability to conduct risk assessments and develop risk management plans.
  • Awareness of cultural diversity in mental health care.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions in line with policies and procedures.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of audit and service evaluation processes.
  • Skilled in engaging children and families in therapeutic interventions.

Training & Supervision

  • Engage in clinical and managerial supervision to ensure safe and effective practice.
  • Present caseload information in supervision sessions for review.
  • Participate in personal development and continued professional training.
  • Contribute to service evaluation, research, and improvement initiatives.

This role requires a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, in line with the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975.
