About the Role

King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Nursing Associate to join the Variety Children’s Hospital (VCH) within its Children’s Critical Care Centre. This 16-bedded unit provides care for both high dependency and intensive care patients.

This role offers the opportunity to care for families whose children are admitted under various specialties, including:

• Neurosurgery, trauma, general medicine, and surgery
• Liver disease and transplantation
• Small bowel transplantation
• Neonatal surgery, intensive care, and high dependency care

The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering high-quality nursing care to children and families. They will be responsible for their own patient workload and must demonstrate excellent communication skills with a caring and compassionate attitude.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical and Patient Care

• Maintain excellent standards of care for all patients.
• Provide compassionate, safe, and effective evidence-based care in a range of settings.
• Monitor the condition and health needs of patients, escalating concerns when necessary.
• Develop an understanding of caring for individuals with specific conditions, such as liver disease, neurosurgical conditions, and trauma.
• Support patients and their families in improving and maintaining physical, mental, and behavioral health.
• Implement appropriate actions to meet the physical, emotional, psychological, social, cultural, and spiritual needs of patients and their families.
• Assist in disease prevention and health promotion initiatives.
• Perform and record clinical observations (blood pressure, temperature, respiration, pulse).
• Accurately record nutritional and fluid intake.
• Identify and report any situations, behaviors, or errors that may lead to poor care outcomes.
• Ensure that the privacy, dignity, and safety of patients is maintained at all times.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential:

• Foundation Degree (FDSc) in Nursing Associate
• GCSE Grade A-C in Maths & English OR Skills Level 2 Maths & English or equivalent
• Active NMC registration as a Nursing Associate

Desirable:

• Understanding of how the role contributes to service development
• Experience of working in a Critical Care environment

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check

This role is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975, requiring a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check for any previous criminal convictions.
