Job Overview

Applications are invited for the position of Band 5 Staff Nurse on the Major Trauma Ward (8AEast) at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

The 22-bed mixed-sex ward specializes in treating patients with multiple complex injuries, including:

  • Spinal injuries
  • Complex orthopaedic and plastic surgeries
  • Chest traumas (e.g., rib fractures and lung injuries)
  • Complex wound care and skin grafts
  • Pain management and rehabilitation

The ward caters to a variety of trauma cases, from road traffic collisions to falls and workplace injuries, offering an excellent opportunity to develop skills in high-dependency nursing, rehabilitation, and discharge planning.

Main Duties

  • Deliver person-centered care, supporting individuals with daily living activities and health promotion.
  • Perform clinical tasks, including venepuncture, ECGs, NG feeding, collar care, and wound management.
  • Ensure privacy, dignity, and safety for patients at all times.
  • Participate in assessing, planning, and evaluating care under the guidance of a registered nurse.
  • Manage clinical observations and escalate concerns as needed.
  • Support complex care delivery, risk management, and discharge planning.
  • Engage in reflective practice to continuously improve care standards.

Candidate Requirements

Essential Criteria

  • Registered General Nurse with current UK NMC registration
  • Recent acute nursing experience

Desirable Criteria

  • Training in pain management (PCA/epidural)
  • Wound care or surgical nursing experience
