OpenAI Launches Powerful GPT-4o

In the ever-evolving world of artificial intelligence, OpenAI has once again raised the bar. The tech giant has unveiled GPT-4o, a new iteration of the GPT-4 model that powers its flagship product, ChatGPT. This updated model is not just an upgrade; it’s a revolution.

OpenAI’s CTO, Mira Murati, announced the launch in a livestream event, revealing that GPT-4o is “much faster” and boasts improved “capabilities across text, vision, and audio.” The best part? It’s free for all users. But don’t worry, paid users, you’re still special. You’ll continue to enjoy up to five times the capacity limits of free users.

The company has stated that GPT-4o’s capabilities will be rolled out iteratively, with its text and image capabilities starting to roll out in ChatGPT from today. But that’s not all. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed that the model is “natively multimodal,” meaning it can generate content or understand commands in voice, text, or images. For the developers itching to get their hands on GPT-4o, they’ll have access to the API, which is half the price and twice as fast as GPT-4 Turbo.

ChatGPT is also getting a makeover with new features coming to its voice mode. Imagine having a Her-like voice assistant that responds in real time and observes the world around you

ChatGPT is also getting a makeover with new features coming to its voice mode. Imagine having a Her-like voice assistant that responds in real time and observes the world around you. That’s what the new model promises to deliver, a significant upgrade from the current voice mode that responds to one prompt at a time and works with only what it can hear.

Reflecting on OpenAI’s journey, Altman acknowledged a shift in the company’s vision. While the original goal was to “create all sorts of benefits for the world,” the focus has now changed to making advanced AI models available to developers through paid APIs. The idea is to let third parties create amazing things that we all benefit from using OpenAI’s AI.

The launch of GPT-4o quashed several conflicting reports predicting that OpenAI was announcing an AI search engine to rival Google and Perplexity, a voice assistant baked into GPT-4, or a totally new and improved model, GPT-5. But one thing is clear, OpenAI knows how to make an entrance, timing this launch just ahead of Google I/O, the tech giant’s flagship conference. As we anticipate the launch of various AI products from the Gemini team at Google I/O, it’s safe to say that OpenAI has set the stage for an exciting showdown.
