Job Overview

Torbay Hospital offers an exciting opportunity to join its ophthalmic unit following the successful expansion of additional theatres in February 2024. These nursing jobs are maternity leave cover within the intravitreal injection service for patients with macular-related conditions. Training will be provided for this role.

The Ophthalmology Unit is seeking a dynamic, highly motivated, and experienced nurse practitioner to participate in the administration of intravitreal injections and Sub-Tenon blocks for ophthalmic surgery. The role will address patient backlogs post-pandemic while embracing innovative service transformations.

Candidates already working in the department are encouraged to complete a training package for intravitreal injection administration. Developmental opportunities, both internal and external, will be offered, alongside the chance to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to enhance services within the ophthalmic unit.

Main Duties of the Job

The Ophthalmic Nurse Practitioner will:

  • Serve as an expert practitioner participating in direct patient care with an assigned caseload.
  • Demonstrate advanced clinical and educational knowledge and skills.
  • Provide training to nursing and clinical staff in ophthalmology.
  • Manage a team of nurses and healthcare assistants, working collaboratively to develop patient-focused services in the Eye Unit.
  • Administer local anesthesia and monitor patient conditions during cataract surgeries.

Detailed Job Description and Responsibilities

The role includes:

  • Acting as a team leader with management responsibilities.
  • Liaising effectively with multidisciplinary teams, service users, and relatives to ensure coordinated, person-centered care.
  • Providing training and mentorship to junior and allied professionals.
  • Administering local anesthesia for cataract surgery and managing preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care within established protocols.
  • Ensuring adherence to clinical governance strategies, including incident reporting and audits.
  • Collaborating with the Matron to improve patient experiences.
  • Maintaining accurate patient records and ensuring high standards of care in line with Trust policies and procedures.
  • Supporting the wider team during peak activity or absences.
  • Actively contributing to the development and review of policies, procedures, and patient information resources.
  • Participating in personal and professional development, including mandatory training, to remain updated on nursing developments and research.

Qualifications
Essential

  • NMC Registered (Level 1)
  • Recognized Postgraduate Ophthalmic Qualification

Desirable

  • Nursing Degree

Knowledge
Essential

  • Evidence of meeting revalidation requirements
  • Ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care
  • Understanding of clinical governance
  • Knowledge of individual health, safety, and clinical risk responsibilities

Desirable

  • Awareness of ICO and related initiatives
  • Experience managing and leading small teams
