Job Summary

Church Road Surgery, based in Aston, Birmingham, is seeking a part-time medical receptionist/administrator to join their existing team. The role requires flexibility, as hours will be worked over five days, and additional coverage may be needed in the absence of team members. While previous experience in general practice is preferred, full training will be provided for the successful candidate.

Main Duties of the Job

  • Answer incoming calls, book appointments, and prepare prescriptions.
  • Input documents and handle general patient-facing administrative tasks.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, doctors, and other staff, ensuring high-quality customer service, particularly under pressure.
  • Maintain a caring and empathetic approach when dealing with patients.
  • General administrative support to the medical team as required.

Responsibilities

  • Making appointments and taking requests for prescriptions.
  • Providing patients with test results and arranging ambulance transport bookings.
  • Handling home visit requests, general enquiries, and complaints.
  • Registering new patients and temporary residents.
  • Managing the reception area, greeting and directing patients and visitors.
  • Handling payments for non-NHS services and ensuring prescription queries are managed effectively.
  • Maintaining a tidy and organised reception and waiting area, adhering to health and safety guidelines.
  • Supporting the medical team by responding to their needs during surgery sessions.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Good standard of general education.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral, with a clear and polite telephone manner.
  • Good IT skills and the ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Interpersonal skills and the ability to handle problem-solving tasks.

Desirable Skills and Qualifications

  • GCSE Mathematics and English (C or above).
  • AMSPAR Receptionist certificate or NVQII in Customer Care.
  • Experience working with EMIS or within a general practice setting.

About Church Road Surgery

Church Road Surgery is a well-established GP training practice, delivering family-centred care to approximately 5,000 patients. The practice includes a dedicated team of 3 GPs, a Nurse Practitioner, a Practice Nurse, Healthcare Assistants (HCAs), and a range of additional roles such as a Practice Pharmacist, Care Co-ordinator, MSK Practitioner, Social Prescriber, and Midwife.

Disclosure and Barring Service Check

This role is subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975.
