Requirements

  • Registered with HCPC as a Speech and Language Therapist
  • Recognised Specialist Dysphagia Practitioner
  • Evidence of post-graduate CPD in neurology or rehabilitation
  • FEES Level 2 competency or equivalent
  • VFSS Level 3 or equivalent
  • Tracheostomy management competency in adults
  • Strong communication, analytical and clinical reasoning skills
  • Experience in supervision, appraisal or line management
  • Flexible, collaborative approach with excellent organisational skills

Salary Details

This role is offered at Band 8a Agenda for Change, with a salary between £61,631 and £68,623 per year inclusive of the High Cost Area Supplement.

About the Role

This is a rare opportunity to step into a clinical leadership role at the forefront of neuro-rehabilitation. The Principal Speech and Language Therapist will lead a dynamic team within the Regional Hyper-Acute Rehabilitation Unit, providing both strategic leadership and direct clinical expertise.

The role blends line management and service leadership with direct patient care, where you’ll work with individuals experiencing complex neurological disability. You’ll manage a clinical caseload and deliver expert assessment and interventions across areas such as FEES, VFSS, tracheostomy, AAC and prolonged disorders of consciousness.

Beyond your caseload, you’ll play a pivotal role in shaping service policy, contributing to planning, and ensuring the trust continues to deliver best-in-class rehabilitation. Your leadership will directly influence patient outcomes, staff development and the trust’s international reputation in the field.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and line-manage the Speech and Language Therapy team to ensure high-quality patient care
  • Maintain a personal caseload, applying advanced clinical expertise in neuro-rehabilitation
  • Provide expert interventions in dysphagia, tracheostomy and communication disorders to enhance recovery outcomes
  • Collaborate with other discipline leads to deliver integrated rehabilitation care
  • Contribute to policy development and service planning, shaping the future of neuro-rehabilitation services
  • Mentor and develop junior staff, supporting clinical supervision and professional growth
  • Actively engage in research and clinical audit projects to strengthen evidence-based practice
