Job Summary

This is an excellent opportunity for a highly skilled Principal Oracle DBA to contribute to the Trust’s Data Warehousing and Cloud-first strategies during the implementation of a new Patient Administration System.

The role requires a highly motivated, self-driven, and forward-thinking professional with expert technical knowledge of Oracle databases and architecture, as well as strong mentoring and leadership skills.

The successful candidate will be based at City Hospital Campus and will collaborate with SQL DBAs, Infrastructure, and Software Development teams. This role involves providing technical leadership, support, and expertise in the architecture, maintenance, upgrading, and troubleshooting of existing Oracle databases, including the Trust’s DHR solution. Additionally, the role will oversee the design, configuration, performance tuning, and implementation of new Oracle databases and emerging database technologies.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide in-depth technical expertise, leadership, and support in Oracle database architecture, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Work with SQL DBAs, Infrastructure, and Software Development teams to enhance the Trust’s database systems.
  • Lead the design, configuration, performance tuning, and deployment of new Oracle databases.
  • Implement backup and recovery strategies (e.g., RMAN, Data Guard).
  • Ensure high availability and disaster recovery (e.g., RAC, Active Data Guard).
  • Optimize performance tuning of Oracle, MySQL, and PostgreSQL databases.
  • Oversee PostgreSQL/MySQL database administration, including Patroni for HA clustering.
  • Utilize Oracle Enterprise Manager and other database tools for performance monitoring and system enhancements.
  • Provide technical mentorship and training to junior database administrators.
  • Participate in senior-level meetings and discussions on database architecture and performance.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Training

Essential:
  • MSc degree or equivalent qualification/experience in IT or a related field.
  • Management/leadership qualification, training, or equivalent experience.
  • Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) certification in relevant Oracle Database versions (e.g., 8, 11g, 19c, 21c).
Desirable:
  • Project Management certification (Prince2, Agile).
  • ITIL Foundation certification for IT service management.

Experience

Essential:
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in Oracle Database Administration.
  • Experience in PostgreSQL/MySQL database administration, including Patroni for HA clustering.
  • Hands-on expertise with Oracle Enterprise Manager and other Oracle tools.
  • Advanced performance tuning and optimization of Oracle, MySQL, and PostgreSQL.
  • Implementation of backup and recovery strategies (e.g., RMAN, Data Guard).
  • Experience in high availability and disaster recovery (e.g., RAC, Active Data Guard).
Desirable:
  • Knowledge of containerization & orchestration (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Familiarity with Oracle Forms.
  • Experience with Percona, performance monitoring, and backup solutions.
  • Hands-on experience with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

Communication & Leadership Skills

Essential:
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to motivate and lead teams, communicating with clarity and enthusiasm.
  • Proven ability to lead or chair meetings at a senior level.
Desirable:
  • Mentoring and coaching experience.
