Job Summary

This is not a typical catering role. It is an opportunity to apply your culinary skills in a professional, industrial kitchen while making a significant impact beyond the kitchen. The role involves overseeing offenders in the preparation and cooking of quality, nutritional meals for the entire prison. In addition to cooking, you will support offenders in learning new skills and working toward qualifications to improve their employment prospects and reduce reoffending.

Job Description

  • Work within an industrial kitchen environment, benefiting from a stable salary, pension, and Civil Service benefits.
  • Participate in apprenticeship opportunities to earn while you learn.
  • Oversee the preparation and cooking of meals while maintaining hygiene and safety standards.
  • Help offenders develop skills and gain qualifications in food production.
  • Work shifts that include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and public holidays.

Salary and Working Hours

  • Basic Workweek: 37 hours
  • Shift Patterns: Includes hours outside 7 am – 7 pm Monday to Friday, plus weekends and public holidays.
  • Additional Pay: 20% unsocial hours allowance
  • Salary Including Unsocial Hours Allowance:
  • Minimum: £37,973
  • Maximum: £39,983
  • Part-time and job share arrangements may be considered based on business needs.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • Level 2 Certificate in Food Production within Hospitality and Catering (or equivalent).
  • Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate.
  • Vocational Qualification at Level 3 (or willingness to obtain this within an agreed timeframe).
  • Knowledge of health, safety, and hygiene regulations in a kitchen setting.
  • Experience in an industrial kitchen environment.
  • Strong communication skills in English.

Note: Food safety (HACCP) refresher training should be completed every three years.
