About the Role

Prison officers are tasked with protecting the public while making a positive impact on prisoners’ lives. This role requires individuals with integrity, strong character, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, challenging environment. Officers support the rehabilitation of prisoners, foster positive relationships, and ensure the safety and security of the facility.

Eligibility

  • Must be 18 years old at the point of employment.
  • Meet Civil Service Nationality requirements.
  • Must pass a medical and fitness assessment.
  • Must meet the required eyesight standards (with or without corrective lenses).
  • Must have suitable hearing (without the use of hearing aids).
  • Tattoos are permitted, but must not be offensive, discriminatory, violent, or intimidating.
  • For high-security prisons, candidates must have been a UK resident for the past 3 years.

Salary and Benefits

  • Salary: £34,448 – £38,541 annually, depending on hours worked.
  • Pension: Civil Service Pension with an employer contribution of 28.97%.
  • Annual Leave: 25 days’ holiday, rising to 30 after 10 years of service, plus paid public holidays and one extra privilege day.

Selection Process

  1. Online Tests: Stage 1 assesses basic judgment and numerical skills; Stage 2 assesses your natural behaviours and qualities.
  2. Online Assessment Centre: An in-depth evaluation of your abilities and strengths.
  3. Medical and Fitness Test: Includes eyesight, hearing, and health checks.
  4. Merit-based Hiring: Applicants will be added to a merit list based on assessment scores. Offers are made to those with the highest scores.

Working Patterns

Prisons operate 24/7, requiring various shift patterns, including evenings, nights, weekends, and public holidays. Shift timings and locations should be considered when applying.
