Job Summary

The Probation Officer will undertake a full range of offender management responsibilities, including assessment, sentence implementation, and reporting. The role involves working with individuals on probation, criminal justice agencies, and partner organizations to reduce reoffending and protect the public.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct risk assessments and provide professional advice to courts, the Parole Board, and criminal justice agencies.
  • Supervise individuals on probation under community orders, licences, and custodial sentences.
  • Maintain and update records using computer-based systems.
  • Ensure effective referrals and collaboration between offender management teams, court teams, victim contact units, and external agencies.
  • Attend professional meetings and represent the Probation Service at forums such as MAPPA and MARAC.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to Probation Services Officers (PSOs) and other staff.
  • Conduct mandatory alcohol and drug tests where required.
  • Participate in the delivery of accredited intervention programmes.
  • Uphold safeguarding responsibilities in accordance with statutory requirements and agency policies.
  • Maintain professional standards in line with the aims and values of the Probation Service and HMPPS.

Technical Requirements

Candidates must hold one of the following qualifications:

  • PQF Honours Degree/Graduate Diploma and Level 5 Diploma in Probation Practice
  • Diploma in Probation Studies
  • Diploma in Social Work (Probation option)
  • CQSW (Probation option)

Additionally, candidates must have:

  • A strong understanding of the Criminal Justice System and the Probation Service.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, National Standards, and risk assessment tools.
