Job Summary
Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Radiotherapy Electronics Engineer to join a highly skilled engineering team. This role involves delivering high-quality maintenance and repair services for radiotherapy equipment at Charing Cross Hospital and Hammersmith Hospital.
The successful candidate will hold a BSc in Electrical and Electronics Engineering (or equivalent) and have extensive experience working with radiotherapy linear accelerators (Linacs). The role offers the opportunity to work with cutting-edge medical technology, ensuring that complex, patient-critical systems are maintained to the highest standard.
As the Trust performs all maintenance in-house, the role provides a dynamic and challenging work environment with continuous learning opportunities. The department also includes fully equipped electronics and mechanical workshops, a Clinical Scientific Computing Group, and 3D-printing facilities.
Applicants with less experience may be considered for a lower-band position.
Main Responsibilities
- Perform Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM), servicing, and repairs of complex radiotherapy equipment, ensuring maximum uptime.
- Work on highly specialized patient-critical systems, including Varian TB linacs, radiotherapy CT, Flexitron, and X-Strahl units.
- Conduct on-site repairs and bespoke technical projects using fully equipped electronics and mechanical workshops.
- Receive in-service education and training from senior engineers and equipment manufacturers.
- Rotate between Charing Cross Hospital and Hammersmith Hospital, working under supervision until competency is signed off.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, minimizing risks to patients, visitors, and staff.
Person Specification
Education & Qualifications
✅ Essential:
- BSc in Electrical and Electronics Engineering (or equivalent).
- Relevant manufacturer training certificates.
- Strong aptitude for working with advanced electronic equipment.
✅ Desirable:
- Additional qualifications in radiotherapy engineering or medical electronics.
Experience
✅ Essential:
- Practical experience working with advanced technology in a healthcare setting.
- Ability to prioritize and manage workload effectively.
- Awareness of ionizing radiation hazards and associated safety protocols.
✅ Desirable:
- Experience with patient-critical radiotherapy equipment.
Skills & Knowledge
✅ Essential:
- Excellent hand-eye coordination for handling precision instruments and fine tools.
- Ability to troubleshoot and repair delicate electronic components.
✅ Desirable:
- Knowledge of radiotherapy equipment maintenance and electronic circuit design.
