Job Summary

Northampton General Hospital is seeking an experienced healthcare worker with a Level 4 Vocational qualification to support the Macmillan Rarer Tumour Nurse Specialist. The role involves providing high-quality, patient-centred care to individuals suspected of having a rarer form of cancer.

The post holder will work alongside the Macmillan Rarer Tumour Nurse Specialist, conducting holistic patient and carer assessments, offering general support and information, and ensuring smooth coordination of care throughout the cancer pathway. This role is crucial in ensuring that patients receive timely assistance and referrals when specialist input is required.

The administrative responsibilities of the role include data entry on the Somerset Cancer Registry, coordinating patient appointments, and liaising with healthcare professionals across organisations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the first point of contact for patients and carers, identifying and addressing their holistic needs.
  • Provide general cancer-related information and support from diagnosis through the treatment pathway.
  • Signpost patients to other services and agencies while escalating cases requiring specialist intervention.
  • Assist with patient appointment bookings and ensure smooth care coordination.
  • Offer holistic support to patients requiring lifelong treatment but who do not need specialist intervention.
  • Work as an extended member of multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) to maintain effective communication across healthcare services.
  • Undertake administrative duties, including data entry on the Somerset Cancer Registry and coordinating patient pathways.

Person Specification

Essential Education, Training & Qualifications

  • GCSEs in English and Mathematics (or equivalent).
  • Vocational Qualification Level 4.
  • Foundations in Cancer Care (or willingness to undertake).
  • Communication Skills Training.

Essential Knowledge & Experience

  • Significant experience in caring for cancer patients.
  • Previous healthcare experience at Band 3 or equivalent.
  • Experience using the Somerset Cancer Register.

Desirable Knowledge & Experience

  • Understanding of the National Personalised Care Agenda.

Essential Skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong observation, assessment, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Capacity to handle pressure and prioritise workload effectively.
  • Good IT skills, including data entry.
  • Strong organisational skills.

Additional Requirements

  • Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check required.
  • Compliance with UK Visa and Immigration requirements, including presenting a criminal record certificate if applicable.
