Requirements
- Medical degree from a recognised university
- Full GMC registration and eligibility to live and work in the UK
- Foundation competencies achieved in line with GMC standards
- Previous experience in orthopaedics or plastic surgery
- Ideally completed Core Surgical Training and membership of the Royal College of Surgeons or equivalent
- Strong academic curiosity and motivation to contribute to high-impact surgical research
Salary Details
This is a hospital medical and dental staff grade post with a salary of £65,048 per year under the national pay scheme.
About the Role
As a Research Fellow in Hands and Nerve Surgery, you’ll join a specialist team working at the intersection of surgery and scientific innovation. You’ll contribute to clinical trials, develop your own pilot study, and support new research proposals and grant applications. Your work will involve hands-on clinical engagement in trauma clinics and theatre sessions, blending practical experience with academic research.
This role is ideal if you want to strengthen your academic credentials, publish original research, and build a career in reconstructive or peripheral nerve surgery. Every day, you’ll be working with world-class surgeons whose research shapes modern practice and influences outcomes far beyond the hospital.
Key Responsibilities
- Support ongoing clinical research trials and contribute to new study development that drives innovation
- Collect, analyse, and present research data at conferences to strengthen professional exposure
- Collaborate with medical, nursing, and therapy staff to ensure safe and effective patient involvement in studies
- Develop independent research projects and generate pilot data that supports future funding bids
- Participate in hand trauma clinics and theatre lists to deepen clinical understanding
- Complete Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training and adhere to all Trust and MHRA research regulations
