About the Role
Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is building something new. A Clinical Data Science and Engineering Unit designed to turn high-volume data into real-world impact. This is more than operations – it’s a collaborative hub working across digital teams, clinicians, academics and industry partners to build solutions that transform healthcare delivery and research.
This new team will drive cutting-edge data projects, from predictive analytics to medical device-grade tools. As a Research Software Engineer, you’ll play a central role in shaping and delivering the data systems that power this vision – starting with large-scale oncology datasets and expanding across the Trust.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop scalable, secure, and efficient data engineering pipelines for clinical and research use
- Support technical delivery of commercial partnerships and research collaborations
- Curate and manage deep, longitudinal, anonymised research datasets
- Implement cloud-based data architectures using tools like Azure, AWS, MS Fabric
- Enable the deployment of advanced analytics tools in line with clinical governance standards
- Collaborate across teams to influence data strategy and ensure clinical relevance
What You’ll Bring
Essential Skills and Experience
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or a related field
- Strong background in data engineering and enterprise data architecture
- Proficiency in Python, SQL, Java and cloud environments (e.g. Azure, AWS)
- Experience working with large-scale clinical or health data
- Understanding of GDPR, cybersecurity, and data governance in healthcare
- Ability to communicate technical ideas clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Experience presenting complex concepts to senior decision-makers
Desirable Skills
- Experience in NHS or public sector data systems
- Knowledge of OMOP, SNOMED CT, ICD-10, and other healthcare ontologies
- Familiarity with machine learning, NLP, or network analysis in clinical environments
- Experience with generative AI-supported development workflows
- Research grant writing or co-investigator experience
