Former Arsenal striker Robin van Persie has been appointed as the head coach of Dutch club Heerenveen. This marks Van Persie’s first head coaching role in the top flight of professional football.

The 40-year-old Dutchman, who holds the record as the all-time top scorer for the Netherlands men’s national team, will begin his tenure this summer on a two-year contract. Van Persie concluded his playing career in 2019 at Feyenoord, where he subsequently took on various coaching responsibilities, including overseeing a youth team.

Van Persie’s professional career began in 2001 with Feyenoord, after which he enjoyed successful stints at Arsenal, Manchester United, Fenerbahçe, and finally returned to Feyenoord for his last season. During his coaching development, he also spent time at Manchester United’s training center under the guidance of Erik ten Hag, a fellow Dutch coach.

Heerenveen, based in the northern part of the Netherlands, will host a press conference with Van Persie on Tuesday to formally introduce him as the new head coach. The team, currently in the middle of the Eredivisie standings, has one game left in this season.

Van Persie’s appointment is expected to bring a fresh perspective to Heerenveen, leveraging his extensive experience as a player and a coach. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how his leadership will shape the future of the club.

As Heerenveen looks ahead to the next season under Van Persie’s guidance, anticipation is building for what could be a transformative period for the club. The Dutch football community is watching closely, excited to see one of its legendary players transition into a significant coaching role.
