Requirements

  • HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist
  • Degree in Biomedical Science plus MSc in Cellular Pathology or IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma or Fellowship of IBMS
  • Strong leadership and staff management experience
  • Skilled in quality management systems and ISO 15189 standards
  • Evidence of recent specialist experience in Cellular Pathology within the NHS or equivalent
  • Excellent communication and time management skills
  • Commitment to professional development and service improvement
  • Desirable: additional qualifications in management, training, or quality systems

About the Role

As a Senior Biomedical Scientist in Cellular Pathology, you’ll help shape the department’s future. You’ll oversee quality management systems, training, and health and safety, all while ensuring the lab continues to deliver reliable, timely results. This isn’t just about processes, it’s about ensuring patients get the right diagnosis when they need it.

You’ll work closely with the laboratory manager and other senior staff, stepping in to deputise when required. From supervising staff and supporting training, to contributing to audits and service development, your role will directly influence the team’s performance and patient safety outcomes. It’s a mix of leadership and technical expertise where your impact will be felt every day.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and support the Cellular Pathology team to maintain high-quality diagnostic services that underpin patient care
  • Manage and monitor quality systems to ensure compliance with ISO 15189 standards
  • Oversee training and competency development across the department and mortuary, helping colleagues grow in their roles
  • Take responsibility for health and safety, ensuring a safe environment for staff and patients
  • Provide leadership support and deputise for the laboratory manager when required
  • Contribute to audits, service development, and continuous improvement that benefit the wider organisation
