Requirements

  • Degree or HNC/HND in Biomedical, Electronic, Mechanical, or related Engineering discipline
  • Manufacturer-approved training or willingness to complete it
  • Experience maintaining and repairing medical devices
  • Strong understanding of analogue, digital, computer, and mechanical systems
  • Ability to supervise and guide junior staff positively
  • Confident communication skills when advising clinical teams

About the Role

In this Senior Medical Engineer position, you’ll take ownership of maintaining, repairing, and commissioning complex medical equipment, from anaesthetic and ventilator systems to neonatal care devices. Your technical judgement will shape safe patient care, and your expertise will guide junior engineers and apprentices as they grow in their careers.

You’ll also provide essential technical support to clinical staff, ensuring equipment is used safely and effectively. This is more than fixing machines, it’s about being a vital part of the healthcare system where patients depend on reliable technology. Participation in the on-call rota will also place you at the heart of urgent out-of-hours care support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out maintenance and calibration so equipment remains safe and dependable
  • Commission and acceptance test new equipment to guarantee readiness for use
  • Offer practical advice to clinical staff, ensuring confidence in safe equipment operation
  • Supervise and mentor junior engineers, fostering growth and technical skill
  • Keep clear and accurate records that support governance and audit standards
  • Contribute to departmental policies and quality systems to drive improvement
