Salary Details
This post offers a Band 6 salary ranging from 37,338 to 44,962 per year depending on experience.
About the Role
This isn’t your standard SLT post. You’ll be based at HMP Deerbolt, a Category C men’s prison in Barnard Castle, and play a key role in the prison’s mental health team. You’ll assess and support men with speech, language, communication, and swallowing needs, often linked to complex psychological or cognitive conditions.
Your role matters because the ability to communicate affects everything – from managing emotions to engaging in therapy and education. In this unique setting, your input could be the difference between isolation and progress for someone inside.
You’ll work closely with a passionate team and tap into a growing network of SLTs within the Health and Justice system. With well-defined peer structures and continuous training, they’ll have your back as much as you’ve got theirs.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver assessments and interventions for communication and swallowing needs
- Support individuals and their key workers with tailored communication strategies
- Act as a trusted advisor to mental health, education, prison staff, and probation teams
- Develop communication aids and accessible information for people in custody
- Contribute to a multi-disciplinary approach for care and rehabilitation
- Promote workforce awareness of SLCN and provide staff training sessions
Disclosure and Barring Service Check
This role involves contact with vulnerable individuals and requires an enhanced DBS check under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975.
Certificate of Sponsorship
Applications from job seekers who require current Skilled Worker sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. For further information visit the UK Visas and Immigration website.
Equal Opportunity Statement
They welcome applications from all backgrounds. Their hiring decisions are based on skills, experience, and potential, not on your postcode or passport. If you’re qualified and ready to help others thrive, they’d love to hear from you.
