Requirements
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- Full GMC registration with licence to practise and good standing
- At least six years’ experience at specialty grade in General Adult Psychiatry
- Strong leadership and teamwork skills
- Effective communication and empathy in patient interactions
- Experience supervising trainees and supporting junior colleagues
- Eligible for or willing to obtain Section 12(2) MHA 1983 approval within six months
- Commitment to patient safety, quality improvement, and continuous reflection on clinical competence
Salary Details
You’ll earn £100,870 – £111,441 per year, plus a structured £35,000 Recruitment and Retention package (£10,000 on appointment, £10,000 at 12 months, £7,500 at 24 months, and £7,500 at 36 months).
About the Role
As a Specialist Grade Psychiatrist, you’ll join two adult inpatient wards, Rowan and Maple, both 17-bed mixed units for working-age adults experiencing acute mental health crises. You’ll work alongside a full medical team including a substantive Consultant Psychiatrist and trainee doctors, playing a key role in assessment, treatment planning, and patient recovery.
This is more than just ward work. You’ll influence service development, mentor junior doctors, and collaborate with an established multidisciplinary team made up of nurses, occupational therapists, clinical psychologists, and activity workers. Your leadership will help foster a calm, therapeutic ward culture where recovery is always the focus.

Key Responsibilities
- Provide specialist psychiatric assessments and interventions for adult inpatients to support safe and effective recovery
- Lead multidisciplinary team discussions, ensuring integrated and holistic treatment planning
- Supervise and guide junior medical staff to support their professional growth
- Collaborate with senior consultants to influence service improvements and quality initiatives
- Promote a therapeutic and inclusive ward environment that empowers patients and staff
- Maintain high standards of documentation and adherence to clinical governance principles
