Job Overview
An exciting opportunity is available for a motivated, experienced, and forward-thinking Band 7 Parkinson’s Disease Specialist Nurse to join the Cross-Bay Parkinson’s Specialist Care team at the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust.

The role involves managing, caring for, and supporting patients with Parkinson’s. Responsibilities include visiting and supporting patients and staff across inpatient areas within RLI. A minimum of two years of recent, significant experience is required to make a meaningful contribution to the team.

This role involves working in partnership with people with Parkinson’s, their families/carers, and other professionals to provide specialist, evidence-based, and high-quality care. Duties include leading, organizing, and delivering ongoing education for patients and training for professionals, as well as contributing to the development of local Parkinson’s care strategies and guidelines. Flexibility is essential as the Parkinson’s team covers the entire Morecambe Bay area across three main hospital sites.

Main Duties of the Job
The successful candidate will work as part of an integrated team, with opportunities to develop skills across various areas. Key responsibilities include:

  • Assessing people with Parkinson’s.
  • Agreeing and reviewing treatment plans for inpatients and delivering nurse-led clinics.
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams in hospital and community settings.
  • Providing support and advice to healthcare professionals on evidence-based care as per guidelines.
  • Delivering structured education groups to equip people with Parkinson’s for self-management.
  • Offering formal and informal education to health professionals.
  • Conducting evaluations and clinical audits to enhance patient care and outcomes.
  • Supporting an integrated nursing team across primary and secondary care settings as needed.

Working for the Organisation
University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay operates three main hospitals: Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal. Additional community healthcare services are provided at Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and RLI offer general hospital services, emergency departments, critical/coronary care units, and various consultant-led services. WGH provides urgent treatment and a range of planned care, including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, and surgeries.

Community services focus on supporting independence, improving health, and managing conditions through high-quality care, advice, and support delivered in homes, clinics, and community facilities.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

  • Evidence of a recognized post-registration qualification in Diabetes.
  • Relevant, recent experience in Diabetes.
  • Leadership and management experience.
  • Teaching experience.
  • High degree of autonomy in Diabetes management.
  • Experience in audit and research.
  • Experience in complex case management.
  • Ability to travel as required.
  • Knowledge of clinical governance and its application.

Desirable Criteria

  • Strategic and operational-level experience.
  • Non-medical prescribing qualification.
  • Master’s degree.
