Requirements
- Degree in Speech and Language Therapy or pending graduation
- HCPC registration or pending (UK-qualified or international)
- IELTS level 8 (for overseas candidates)
- Experience with adults with learning disabilities, mental health issues, or complex needs
- Willingness to supervise and delegate tasks to associate practitioners
- Awareness of professional standards and an understanding of evidence-based practice
- Knowledge of dysphagia management is preferred but not essential
Salary Details
This is a Band 6 NHS role, with an annual salary range between 29,970 and 44,962. Consideration will be given to Band 5 applicants ready for a development opportunity.
About the Role
They’re looking for someone with heart and skill to step into a key Specialist Speech and Language Therapist role supporting adults with learning disabilities. Based in Darlington, you’ll work face-to-face with service users tackling communication and swallowing challenges.
This isn’t just clinical work. You’ll partner with occupational therapists, social workers, support workers, psychologists, and psychiatrists as part of a wider integrated team. Your interventions won’t happen in a vacuum — they’ll be embedded in a multi-disciplinary approach that truly values your input.
From assessments to treatments and team collaboration, every part of your work will shape lives and support autonomy for adults who need your voice to find theirs. You’ll also have the chance to grow through peer support and stretch assignments across other regions like Durham and Teesside.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess and treat communication difficulties in adults with LD
- Deliver interventions for eating, drinking, and swallowing concerns
- Supervise SLT associate practitioners and support their development
- Work in close collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams
- Respond to needs flexibly across Darlington and occasionally wider Trust areas
- Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement through reflective practice
