Job Summary
Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Support Worker to join the Cancer Team at Luton & Dunstable Hospital. This is an exciting opportunity to shape cancer care pathways and support patients throughout their journey. The role involves coordinating cancer care, ensuring that patients receive the right support at the right time, and strengthening existing supportive care services.
The successful candidate will work closely with multi-disciplinary teams (MDT), healthcare professionals, and community services to provide patient-centered care.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
- Serve as the key contact for cancer patients, providing information and support to help them navigate the healthcare system.
- Assist in the development and implementation of cancer survivorship initiatives to support patient independence and self-management.
- Coordinate care by providing a single point of access for cancer patients, including rapid re-entry into the system for urgent or specialist needs.
- Support the operational delivery of cancer care, ensuring that patients receive appropriate services.
- Organize and contribute to health and well-being clinics for cancer patients.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential:
- GCSE English and Mathematics (Grades A-C) or equivalent.
- Foundation degree level training or equivalent.
- NVQ Level 4 or NVQ Level 3 with additional training to diploma level.
Desirable:
- Evidence of continued professional development.
- Willingness to undertake Macmillan learning and development courses.
- Coaching or teaching qualification.
Experience
Essential:
- Relevant health or social care experience at AFC Band 3 or equivalent.
- Experience working in a multi-professional environment.
- Knowledge and experience of data management.
- Strong communication skills and ability to provide person-centered care.
- Understanding of the health and social care system.
Desirable:
- Experience in coordinating patient workloads.
- Awareness of national cancer policies (e.g., Improving Outcomes: A Strategy for Cancer).
- Experience in coaching or teaching patients and carers.
Skills
Essential:
- Strong IT skills.
- Ability to use own initiative and problem-solving skills.
- Effective organization and observation skills.
- Ability to work independently and within a team.
- Self-motivated and able to motivate others.
Desirable:
- European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) or equivalent.
- Phlebotomy skills.
