Requirements
- Upper second-class degree in a science or medicine-related subject
- Significant clinical experience in theatres or similar environments
- Strong communication skills and ability to work under pressure
- Proven ability to handle data entry, audits, and clinical research support
- Comfortable participating in on-call rotation for emergency coverage
- Interest or experience in transplant and retrieval procedures
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and data tracking systems
Salary Details
The salary range for this full-time role is 46,419 to 55,046 per year, in line with NHS pay scales and based on experience.
About the Role
This is your chance to train in a rare and critical area of medicine. As a Trainee Organ Perfusion Practitioner, you’ll step into a high-intensity, high-impact clinical setting where your training directly contributes to transplant outcomes.
You’ll rotate across a range of perfusion responsibilities, learning to operate systems like ex-situ machine perfusion, Cardiohelp, and venovenous bypass during liver transplants and retrievals. You’ll also be part of the National Organ Retrieval Service, supporting a 24-hour on-call rota that ensures vital organs get to patients in time.
It’s a role that combines science, precision, and purpose. You’ll work with some of the UK’s best liver transplant professionals, learning everything from cold perfusion protocols to patient follow-up and audit analysis.
Key Responsibilities
- Train and support machine perfusion during ex-situ liver assessments
- Operate perfusion systems in situ during donation after circulatory death (DCD) retrievals
- Assist with cold perfusion as part of the NORS team when required
- Support data entry, clinical audits, and contribute to service development
- Take part in research and transplant case follow-up
- Liaise with NHSBT and transplant centres across the country
- Help uphold HTA compliance standards and contribute to transplant meetings
- Participate in a 24-hour on-call rota for transplant support
