About the Role
This unique 12-month role is split evenly between paediatric maxillofacial surgery and paediatric dentistry, and it kicks off in September 2025. You’ll be based at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, working shoulder-to-shoulder with leaders in oral medicine, sedation, and facial trauma. Expect to dive into everything from theatre lists and cleft MDTs to acute dental trauma and complex care under GA.
The rotation is rich with hands-on clinical time, including supervised sessions delivering both maxillofacial and comprehensive dental care. Two treatment sessions, one or two theatre lists, and specialist clinic days will give you a weekly rhythm that’s demanding but deeply rewarding.
You’ll work a standard 8.30am to 4.30pm week, with early starts on alternate theatre days. You won’t be resident on-call, but you’ll need to be nearby for emergencies. It’s a focused, frontline training post for someone looking to level up fast in a supportive work environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver supervised oral and maxillofacial procedures under general anaesthesia
- Provide comprehensive paediatric dental care for medically complex children
- Assess and treat acute and long-term dental trauma
- Join cleft, craniofacial, oral medicine and jaw deformity clinics
- Attend governance meetings and participate in departmental audits
- Present case-based discussions to enhance clinical insight
- Work across Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Birmingham Dental Hospital
Disclosure and Barring Service Check
This role is covered by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and will require a DBS check before starting.
