Salary Details

The role is offered at £38,682 – £46,580 per year, with full NHS benefits and pension.

About the Role

This role isn’t just about scanning images, it’s about shaping the way patients experience care. As a Trainee Sonographer, you’ll join a training pathway that combines postgraduate study with hands-on practice. Over 18 to 24 months, you’ll work across specialties such as obstetrics, gynaecology, abdominal ultrasound, and small parts, developing the confidence to work independently in a senior role.

Your training will cover advanced technical skills, but it’ll also prepare you for the human side of healthcare – from breaking difficult news to supporting patients through uncertain moments. By the end of the programme, you’ll be ready to report scans independently, contribute to clinical governance, and play a vital role in diagnostic services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform ultrasound examinations across specialties that inform accurate diagnoses
  • Support patient care by explaining procedures and ensuring comfort throughout
  • Learn to break sensitive news with empathy and professionalism
  • Contribute to audits and quality assurance to improve service delivery
  • Attend clinical governance sessions to share learning and reflect on practice
  • Take part in CPD activities, building knowledge that benefits both patients and career progression
